Computer programs–can never be sentient, can never be ‘intelligent’, they will never have the ability to actually think; they are a series of zero’s and one’s utterly devoid of intellect, they do as they are programmed to do. The only mean’s of true artificial intelligence, is to merge computer programs, and hardware, with biological life which has at least some intellectual capacity, e.g., a monkey. Or in the worst extreme, a human being. (The latter which is actually what they are working to accomplish, partially under the guise of ‘helping humanity’.)
And yet, there is an entire branch of modern science that attempts to convince us that WE are nothing more than biological computers. On top of that, there are multiple types of human intelligence – none of which seem to cause anyone to claim that Person X or Y are less sentient or conscious than anyone else. So to me, until we can answer the question for ourselves, we don’t really have any strong foundation to make any real claims about machines (non-human ones, assuming you count us as machines).
