After my last post entitled Make Your Own Carpet Cleaner Solution, I realized that there is one other cleaning solution which never hangs around very long: glass cleaner!
I don’t know about you, but I can never find a bottle of the stuff. Maybe the problem is that with enough windows and mirrors around, you need a LOT of glass cleaner to keep everything looking sparkly clean. Alas, that costs money.
As you may have guessed, glass cleaner is ridiculously simple and cheap to make. Even if you’re paying 99 cents for a refill bottle, you’re paying way too much.
And so, in this post, I shall endeavor to instruct you on how you can brew your own “Bling” Glass Cleaning Solution!
If you have already created a batch of Devastator Carpet Cleaner, you already have most of the items you will need to make your own Bling. The one thing that is probably missing is a bottle of 95% alcohol (the cleaning kind, not the drinking kind).
So, here’s what you’ll need:
- A 1.5L container
- 2 tablespoons ammonia
- 1/2 cup alcohol
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon dishsoap
- juice from 1/2 of a small lemon, strained
- 2-3 drops red food coloring
- 1L water
The 1 liter of water should be distilled, especially if your tap water is seriously nasty. Water with a high mineral content may leave streaks, and we don’t want that! For the white vinegar, you can usually find it at your local food store next to the other types of vinegar. It’s sometimes called “crystal vinegar”. The dishwashing liquid should be the translucent yellow or green kind – no creamy stuff with moisturizers and all that jazz.
Other than that, you just mix all the ingredients together, stir, and then cover. Alcohol evaporates at room temperature, so mix quickly.
You can omit the lemon juice if you’d like. I included it to help cover the ammonia smell. I should note that the end solution will be a lovely shade of pink, but it might not smell like commercial glass cleaner. It shouldn’t smell bad, either – but just to warn you. We’re not including any fancy-schmancy perfumes to give it a sale-enhancing scent, because we don’t need to. If you want it to smell good, you can experiment and add a drop or two of various scented oils or whatever floats your boat.
All that’s left is to fill a spare spray bottle, and go to town. Your home-brewed batch of Bling will do a really good job at degreasing and cleaning windows and mirrors!
You can try it for other cleaning tasks as well. I’ve been told that my Devastator Carpet Cleaner is excellent for cleaning other things like greasy surfaces in the kitchen.
That’s not terribly surprising. Remember how Great Grandma’s house was always so nice and clean? Well, guess what? She didn’t use any cleaning products with “non-ionic surfactants” or god knows what. She used the old-fashioned stuff, people! The reason the fancy cleaning chemicals were introduced wasn’t because they clean better – they were adopted by manufacturers because they are cheaper. It’s the same reason that softdrink makers started using the far less healthy high-fructose corn syrup instead of sugar. It doesn’t taste better, it tastes worse – but it’s cheaper to produce!
Well, the heck with all that. Now you can brew your own glass cleaner for way less money, you’ll never run out, and it will work better than the fancy stuff!
